2018 Michigan Horse Expo

March 9th-11th, 2018

Christie Showerman, Northfork Farms & Outback

In 1985 Christie Showerman founded a Quarter Horse training facility in Fowlerville, Michigan. Soon after in 1990 Jim Evans from Kalkaska, Michigan would join the team where the farm would be founded in Webberville as Northfork Farms. Northfork would became the home of 65 top placings at the World, Congress and Nation for the next 20 years as a Quarter Horse training facility.

In 2005 the decision was made to cut back on the training and expand the farm elsewhere. The vision of Christie would create a summer horse day camp along with developing a lesson program that would teach children of various ages and experience on how to ride, work safely, and understand how a horse thinks and reacts.

Along with the development of the summer camp and lesson program an 1800’s Wild West would be built and replicated on the farm. With over 45 hands on activities the farm would now market toward schools, daycares, and recreational groups. Once the Wild West was developed the addition of a petting zoo with exotic animals was developed which added an additional teaching station.

In 2011 Christie would step back into the Quarter Horse training with current lesson students gaining an additional 2 Congress Champions and 4 Reserve Congress Champions.

In 2016 Northfork built two cabins along with the finishing of their new clubhouse which allows the farm to run day and overnight retreats.

Today Northfork is under the ownership and direction of Christie and Todd Showerman. Operations include a lesson program that is teaching 100 students on a weekly basis, offering summer day and overnight camps for various ages, and the Wild West which is the home to 50+ field trips a year.

Christie and Northfork are also the official trainers of the Michigan State University Equestrian Stock Team.

Various other activities that the farm currently offers are sleigh rides, company, group retreats, and special public events.

Further goals and expansion for Northfork is a carriage house, mini cattle drives, and a new horse facility. Additional information on Northfork and their programs is available on their website: www.northforkoutback.com.
